Sri Lankan Iced Coffee (Ayis Kōpi)

Though well-known for its Ceylon tea, Iced Coffee is very popular in Sri Lanka. It is called Ayis Kōpi (අයිස් කෝපි) in Sinhalese which is translated to iced coffee.

The classic Sri Lankan Iced Coffee is an awesome party drink on a hot summer day. But It is also a great coffee drink on any day of the year.

Most regular iced coffee is made with hot coffee using ground coffee beans or instant coffee. Then it is left to cool in the fridge. It is served poured over ice with or without sweetener and milk. This classic Sri Lankan Iced coffee is not just a regular-style chilled coffee drink.

Traditional Sri Lankan Iced Coffee is made with a lot of sweetened condensed milk. It also includes spices like cardamom and cloves, brandy, and vanilla. So, it is sweet, spicy, creamy, and rich in flavor. Thus, it is distinctive from most regular iced coffee recipes.

It has been one of the most popular party drinks in Sri Lanka for years and remains on top. At any party you go to in Sri Lanka, iced coffee will be served.

Yes, it’s a perfect drink to serve your guests when celebrating something special. Add some brandy to lend it a kind of festive twist.

It is inexpensive when you make it in large quantities. You can make a concentrated iced coffee mix in advance and store it in the fridge. Then dilute the iced coffee concentrate with cold water and serve over ice or of course with ice cream.

Ingredients

  • Water: You can adjust the amount of water to adjust the concentration of iced coffee.
  • Whole Spices: Traditionally, cardamom pods and cloves are used.
  • Coffee: I used instant coffee. You can use your favorite ground coffee or instant coffee. Adjust the amount of coffee you use depending on your preference.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: It makes an extra rich, sweet, and creamy Sri Lankan-style iced coffee drink. You can adjust the amount you use, depending on your preference.
  • Sugar: You can adjust the amount you use. This depends on your preference. Make sure to add sugar to hot coffee and mix well before cooling.
  • Ice Cubes or Crushed Ice: You can serve iced coffee with or without ice.
  • Vanilla extract/Essence: If desired, add vanilla to enhance the flavor.
  • Brandy: The traditional alcoholic version is made with brandy. You can add a dash of brandy to give it an extra kick. OR if alcohol is not your thing, the brandy can easily be omitted.

serving Suggestions

Being a tropical country in Sri Lanka, it is commonly served cold, over ice cubes. But, It can be enjoyed cold or hot. And just feel free to serve it with your choice of toppings and syrups.

With Ice Cubes

To serve the iced coffee, fill up a glass with ice and pour the cooled iced coffee over it.

With Ice Cream

You can also use ice cream to put a fun twist and serve it as a coffee dessert. All you need is a scoop of ice cream and a glass of Sri Lankan-style iced coffee. Just before serving, top with a scoop of ice cream. You can also put the ice cream in a chilled glass. Then pour the cold iced coffee over the top.

With Jelly (Jello)

You can also make a coffee jelly drink. Place cubes of coffee jelly (or your choice of jelly) in the bottom of the serving glass. Then, pour the cooled iced coffee over it.

Step-by-Step Recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 400 ml water
  • 5 cardamoms crushed
  • 5 cloves crushed
  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee
  • 100 g sweetened condensed milk
  • Sugar to taste, if using
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon brandy

Instructions

I used cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves.

Crush the cardamom pods and cloves.

Place the water, crushed cardamom, and cloves in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes.

Add the instant coffee and mix well.

Add the condensed milk and sugar if using. Mix well.

Then take it off the heat and let the mixture cool. Once cool, strain the mixture into a large jug to get rid of the spice residue.

Lastly, add in brandy and vanilla essence. Mix well. Serve chilled with ice cream.
